Let's Talk About Propsby George & Dorothy Peter on 01/25/18
Whether you have a little boat with a trolling motor or a seventy-five-foot yacht, you won’t get anywhere without a propeller. There are several factors that go in to determining the appropriate propeller for your boat. When you call us at Cool Breeze Marine – The Prop Specialists, we will ask you many questions about your boat and its performance. The basics are the make and model of your boat, length, engine size and year. What kind of prop do you have on your boat now? How many people are on your boat on average? Then we’ll move on to what you want your boat to do: better hole shot, mid-range or top end. The biggest component in determining the best propeller choice for you is what your RPM’s are at wide open throttle. The boat manufacturers have guidelines for what your RPM’s should be to get the best performance out of your boat. If you’re not reaching the correct RPM’s, then you might need to change your prop. One pitch up or one pitch down can change your RPM’s by 200 - 250. Running the wrong propeller can and will shorten the life of your engine.
The number of blades your prop has is also important. A three-blade versus a four-blade is something to consider. Typically, a three-blade is faster on top end and creates more bow lift. A four-blade is better for your hole shot and for keeping your boat on plane at lower speeds. If the maintenance of your boat is up to par, then the only thing that could be holding you back is whether you have the correct prop.
Do you have a spare prop? If you are out on the lake and the prop you are using becomes damaged, what will you do? Having a spare prop could save the day, the weekend or your vacation. Consider the props on your boat as the tires. You have a spare tire in your car I’m sure, why not have one for your boat? Don’t get stuck out in the middle of the lake waiting for someone to pull you to shore. Change the “flat tire” and continue with your fun day on the lake. At Cool Breeze Marine – The Prop Specialists, we can repair your damaged prop and sell you a spare. Sometimes the prop isn’t damaged, the hub could have spun. We can re-hub the prop for you and get you on your way in 24 hours for rubber hubs or in minutes with the new hub insert kits.
Many damaged propellers can be repaired. When you bring us your damaged props, please make sure you bring them all. If your boat runs more than one prop (dual props, left and right, etc.) bring them all in because, even though the others may not look damaged, they could become unbalance due to the impact that the damaged prop received. We can check and balance them for you. When you take your car in to have the tires balanced, they don’t just balance one tire, do they? Look at your boat as your car for the water.
